Name: Austin Yuen
Function: Chief Product Officer
Location: Eindhoven
“I want to help our company get to the next level and I’m very happy everyone has that same goal.”
There’s never a dull moment at GameHouse. From nurturing a pre-released game to analyzing and improving games that are live. But what is it like to work there? We asked Austin Yuen, Chief Product Officer, working for GameHouse from the city of Eindhoven.
What do you do on a daily basis?
“There really is no set schedule. Some of my daily recurring tasks include checking dashboards and reviewing yesterday’s KPIs and then working with our PMs to see if there is anything I can help make their jobs easier. Additionally, I set aside roughly 1 to 1.5 hours a day playing games to understand the market and spot any new trends, which is an awesome benefit of my job!”
How do you stay in touch with your colleagues?
“We are in a hybrid working model throughout the company. This means some colleagues come into the office and we talk in person, but the majority work remote so we do spend quite some time chatting via Zoom. For those that do come into the office, we usually have lunch together and we have also recently started to play Magic The Gathering! For those in Eindhoven, on Fridays, we usually hang out at the office bar afterward, which is always great fun.”
What gets you out of bed in the morning?
“I want to take GameHouse to the next level and make our games a household name. I’m always motivated to make sure the game is improving as well as everyone on our team.”
“I feel success is making sure everyone I work with is a better version of themselves every day.”
When are you fully successful?
“I feel success is making sure everyone I work with is a better version of themselves every day. While the performance of the game is also important, I believe it is more important to look at long-term goals and help everyone improve to get to where we need to go eventually. Also: true success is to help everyone be a better version of themselves and to unlock their true potential.”
How do you see your job now compared to last year?
“I started a year ago as the Director of Product Management and now I am the Chief Product Officer. I’ve taken on a lot more responsibility over the past year, but the one part of my job that I’ve really enjoyed is working directly with both our Barcelona and Eindhoven teams and helping them grow their games.”
What would you like to say to anyone interested in working at GameHouse?
“GameHouse is a very unique company because of our mix of cultures and size of the company. We are larger than a traditional startup, but we’ve kept a startup spirit of curiosity and constant improvement at the core of who we are. If you love games, want to work at a company where all foster curiosity, collaboration, and everyone is dedicated to being better, then we are perfect for you!”
What is the culture at GameHouse like?
“In addition to a cooperative and creative atmosphere, we strive to be better every day by creating a culture that fosters improvement, individually and company-wide. Also very important to me, is that GameHouse sticks to its promises and ambitions. For example, our primary audience is female gamers, and we believe that in order to really understand our players we need to have people that represent our audience throughout the company, whether it is art, marketing, game design, or product development. Therefore, across all disciplines and especially in leadership positions we almost have a 50/50 ratio of women at GameHouse. Everyone can talk about wanting to understand our players and have representation, but at GameHouse we don’t just talk about it, we actually do it.”
